The neighbors across the street are already popping firecrackers. And, it's raining. Finally! However, that won't stop the free neighborhood fireworks extravaganza, I'm sure. I believe they must spend at least $200 or more on things that bang, boom and flash. And I think that's great--it means we don't have to!
(Plus, it sort of makes up for their kids' garage band's repetitive attempts--and I do mean repetitive and "attempts"--at the Scorpion's "Rock me like a Hurricane", which consists of five chords played in the same order. Over and over. Badly.)
Jack is in California at the Atlas Society/TOC Summer Seminar. He gave his speech on Ayn Rand vs the German Romantics today, and I hear it went quite well. On Thursday, he will deliver a talk on "The Joy of Entrepreneurship" in which he discusses how applying Objectivist principles to business is natural and practical, not just something one reads in a book. I hope he goes to Bidinotto's "How to write for The New Individualist". Or as least gets a copy of the lecture (and the one of housekeeping) for me!
Since he is out of town, we will perform our usual ritual without him. After reading aloud the "greatest editorial ever written", we will be stationed on beanbags in the living room alternating our attention between the celebration in Washington DC and the celebration across the street.
Happy Birthday America!
